CIO
We Have Got a New Look and a New Status!
You might have spotted that we have got a new name and charity number as part of our rebrand. That’s because we have recently become a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO), which is an exciting next step for us!
So, what exactly is a CIO?
A CIO (short for Charitable Incorporated Organisation) is a type of legal structure for charities. We have always been a charity, but before this change, we were set up a little differently as an unincorporated organisation.
Now that we have made the switch, our official name is RSPCA South London Branch CIO and our new charity number is 1211123.
Why did we make the change?
Although we are a local, independent charity, we are part of the wider RSPCA family, working alongside RSPCA (England & Wales). The national charity has encouraged local branches to become CIOs because it offers more protection, flexibility and stability for the future.
In short, this change helps us make decisions more easily, operate more securely and continue supporting animals across South London for years to come.
What does this mean for the animals and our work?
The important thing is that nothing is changing in how we help animals. We’ll keep doing what we do best.
From providing expert advice and essential services like microchipping and neutering to offering subsidised treatments and finding loving new homes for local animals, we ensure that every animal receives the care, attention and second chance they deserve.
If you have used our services before, rest assured your personal data is still protected in exactly the same way; it has simply been transferred over to the new CIO.
What about donations, memberships or Gift Aid?
Good news! You don’t need to do a thing! Everything you have already donated or signed up for under our old charity number (276861) automatically moves across to the new one.
The only small exception is if you have left a gift to us in your will. In that case, it is a good idea to update it with our new details:
RSPCA South London Branch CIO, Charity No 1211123
That way, you can be sure your kind legacy goes exactly where you intended – helping local animals in need.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Our Mission
We are the South London Branch of the RSPCA whose mission is to be there for all animals in our large area if and when they need help. Our enlarged branch was formed in 2021 following the merger of the Croydon & Crystal Palace and Balham & Tooting branches, and then further enlarged in 2024 with the addition of the Croydon South area (Purley, Coulsdon, South Croydon etc.).
Our area covers much of the capital south of the river encompassing the whole of Croydon Borough and parts of Wandsworth, including Anerley, Balham, Chipstead, Coulsdon, Croydon, Crystal Palace, Gipsy Hill, Kenley, Mitcham, New Addington, Norwood, Penge, Purley, Sanderstead, Sydenham, Thornton Heath, Tooting, Wallington & Wandsworth (see white area of map below).

The branch is run by a committee of locally elected volunteers who are responsible for the management and administration of the branch’s affairs.
We raise money locally to support our animal welfare work and have three shops in Croydon, Crystal Palace & Tooting (see our shops page for details) as well as an ebay site.
How You Can Help……..
We could not exist to provide vital care for animals if it were not for our wonderful volunteers and donors.
Every year thousands of animals suffer from neglect, cruelty and abuse. Together we can help end their misery.
There are lots of ways that you can help us to be there as the emergency service for animals.
Whether you want to give a simple donation or be a bit more hands on, we’re truly grateful. Take a look around to see how you can help us make a difference to animals lives.
Donations
It costs our branch £8 a day to board just one cat. At any one time our branch could be caring for up to 30 different cats and kittens.
As well as paying for their boarding and food, these cats will also need regular veterinary treatment which can cost us several thousands of pounds per month.
In addition to the animals in our care, we also help members of the public who are on benefits or have a low income and who suddenly face emergency vet costs for their pets.
Donating to our branch means your money will go towards helping the most vulnerable animals in the local area.
