Adopt a Cat or Kitten

Once our rescue animals have seen the vet and we’ve had a little time to get to know them to understand their wants and needs, we will put them up for adoption.

You will see them advertised on our website and/or our Facebook page with all the info you need to know such as:

  • where they came from and any known history such as age & temperament
  • what sort of home they are used to and require going forward
  • whether they can live with children or other animals
  • any unique requirements such as diet or known health challenges
Before adopting, please carefully consider if you are able to give the animal a good home.

Kittens need a lot of care and interaction and we will not rehome a single kitten to anyone who is out for more than 4 hours at a time. For a pair of kittens, the longest they can be left alone is 6 hours.

All our cats (unless Feline Immunodeficiency Virus positive) will need to have access to a safe outside area such as a garden.

Financial Considerations

It is estimated that to own a cat will cost the owner around £1,000 per year – £600 for food, £150 for cat litter and £240 for the basic vet health costs for vaccinations, flea and worming treatment.

You will also need to think about the likes of insurance and boarding fees as additional costs you will need to meet.

Cats can live into their twenties so this is likely to be a long-term commitment.

We think every cat is worth the money and we are not trying to deter you unnecessarily, but you need to make sure you fully understand the responsibility you are taking on before you go ahead and adopt.

Application & Approval Process

Once you have carefully considered the practicalities and you have found an animal you would like to adopt (click this link for current animals up for adoption), please download and complete the Perfect Match adoption form below and submit it to enquiries@rspcasouthlondon.org.uk. You can also send an email if you would like any other information regarding the process.

If we think you appear to be a good match, we will arrange a virtual home check. This involves you sending photos/videos of your main living areas, your safe outside areas and the access to them, and finally where you intend for the animal to eat, sleep and toilet.

If your application is approved, we will put you in touch with the cattery or the foster home where the animal is and they can tell you more info about the animal and send you more pictures. If you’re still happy you want to adopt then you can arrange to collect!

All our animals are vet checked, neutered (where possible – some kittens will be too young to be neutered before they leave us, but we will cover the cost at a vet close to you), vaccinated, microchipped, and given flea and worm treatment.

We only ask for a minimum adoption fee of £90 towards our costs.

Please visit the national website for lots of helpful information about bringing your cat home for the first time: https://www.rspca.org.uk/findapet/adopters

We love to hear how you’re getting on so please do keep in touch afterwards – we adore a rehoming success story!

If you are unable to rehome a cat, please consider a donation instead towards our animal welfare work. You can do so by following this LINK.
