Breeding Like Rabbits

We all know the saying to breed like rabbits. Rabbits have a short gestation period of between 25 and 28 days, which means they can have several litters of babies each year. In addition to that, a female rabbit can reproduce at just a few months old. You do not need to be a mathematician to calculate that this can lead to a lot of rabbits on the scene very quickly.

If you buy more than one rabbit you should have them sexed and ideally neutered. Sexing a rabbit is however far more difficult than it sounds. The RSPCA has published some handy advice for you tell tell your bucks from your does. You can read it here.

RSPCA South London Rabbits

The RSPCA has literally been inundated with calls from owners that inadvertently ended up with more rabbits than they bargained for. “But I was told by the seller that they were two boys!” If we’d had a pound for every time we have heard that in the past few years we would have had enough money for a lifetime’s supply of carrots.

Neutering a rabbit can be an expensive business we know. For that reason we have set up a rabbit neutering scheme in our area. We can arrange the neutering with one of two local veterinary practices for a suggested donation of £10. This is a limited time offer so please be quick.

If you would like to take advantage of this scheme, please contact Jacqui on 07548 840 934 (9am-5pm Mon-Thurs – out of hours please leave a message on answerphone) or email enquiries@rspcasouthlondon.org.uk
