October Is Adoptober!

October is Adoptober and we are celebrating all things related to adopting our rescued animals.

Our Adoptober campaign aims to inspire those able to adopt or foster an animal in need. Sadly, our rescue centres across England and Wales are overwhelmed with unwanted pets. Can you help?

Last year your South London branch of the RSPCA rehomed 120 animals.

There are many things to think about when adopting a pet.  Here are some of the main things to consider:

  • What sort of lifestyle do you have? A single kitten can only be left for up to 4 hours at a time, a pair for up to 6 hours. If you’re out all day then you should consider a slightly older cat.
  • Do you have houseplants? Do your research! Some plants can be poisonous to cats including peace lilies.
  • Can you afford the financial responsibility of a pet? Cats typically live for around 18 years, and cost on average about £1,500 per year. This includes food, litter, annual vet fees including vaccinations and flea and worming treatment. We would also recommend getting insurance to help cover the cost of any unexpected health issues.
  • Make sure you visit the cat before you adopt and ask lots of questions about their personality. Any rescue centre will be happy to help with this as they know how important it it to match the owner’s personality with the right cat.
  • All our cats that are up for adoption are fully assessed, microchipped and we will advise on the best for for you, your type of family set up (eg whether you have children) and type of home.
