Rabbit Awareness Week

It’s Rabbit Awareness Week 2025 (RAW) and we’re all invited to take a fresh look at how we house and care for one of the UK’s most misunderstood pets. This year’s theme is Happy Hoppy Homes, focusing on the environments that rabbits need to stay healthy and content.

The campaign is led by the Rabbit Awareness Action Group (RAAG), a coalition of animal welfare organisations, vets and pet professionals working together to improve rabbit care across the country.

Their aim is simple: to make sure every rabbit has the chance to live in a space that meets
their physical and emotional needs.

What Help Is Available For Rabbit Owners?

To support owners, RAAG has created a range of free downloadable information packs, full of practical advice and printable resources.

The owner pack includes:
– Guidance on minimum housing sizes
– Feeding advice, including how to balance hay, greens and pellets
– A daily care checklist
– Seasonal safety posters and enrichment ideas
– Tips for spotting common health problems early

These resources are designed to be easy to follow and flexible to real-life situations, whether your rabbits live indoors or in a garden setup. You can access the full pack via the campaign website: rabbitawarenessactiongroup.co.uk

Why Rabbit Awareness Week Matters

Despite being the third most popular pet in the UK, rabbits are still one of the most poorly understood. According to the PDSA Animal Wellbeing Report 2024, around 22 percent of pet rabbits (equal to 180,000 individuals) were kept in housing that does not meet minimum welfare guidelines. Many are isolated, confined to hutches that are too small, or lack access to appropriate enrichment.

Rabbit Awareness Week exists to help change this. By raising awareness and making expert advice more accessible, the campaign helps rabbit owners feel more confident in the care they’re
providing.

It can be hard to know if we’re doing the right thing, especially as guidance changes over time. What matters is staying informed and being open to making small improvements when we learn something new.

Ideas To Explore At Home

If you have children, this is a great opportunity to involve them in pet care. The owner pack includes a daily rabbit care checklist that kids can help tick off, covering tasks like topping up hay, checking water, spotting signs of illness and making time for interaction.

For more experienced owners or rabbit enthusiasts, the welfare and health guides are a valuable read. They go into more detail on topics like neutering, bonding, exercise routines and common behavioural issues, helping owners fine-tune the care they provide.
