Catherine – Treasurer

Tell me a little about you – occupation, hobbies, personal life, pets etc.

I live in the outskirts of London with my human family and our much loved Staffordshire terrier, Chichi. I am an accountant and have spent most of my career in financial services and management consulting. We are lucky enough to live near some wonderful parkland, and Chichi and I enjoy daily walks exploring the large green spaces of the area.

How long have you been an RSPCA trustee?

I have been a trustee and treasurer since January 2024.

As a trustee, what are your responsibilities?

Our mission is to support animal welfare for all animals in our area, and as a trustee my role is to promote the success of the branch in this mission. Myself and the other volunteer trustees guide the strategy for the branchand oversee the 4 charity shops and 12 employees who do wonderful work raising money and providing animal welfare in our Branch area.

As the Treasurer, I am responsible for monitoring the organisation’s finances on behalf of the whole board of trustees and to report regularly on them to the board.

Why did you become a trustee of RSPCA?

I grew up in a semi-rural environment in Australia and have always loved animals. At various stages, my family had cats, dogs, geese, guinea pigs, donkeys, horses, goats, gold fish and a python (that lived in the roof).

I believe domestic animals enhance our lives by adding fun and love to a household and can teach children important lessons about caring. The preservation of our natural environment and the animals within it are now receiving more focus but we still have a long way to go.

The work of the RSPCA in supporting animal welfare for both domestic and wild animals has an important role to play in supporting the wellbeing of all animals.

Do you have a message for our followers/supporters/volunteers?

Thank you for all your help! We always have ways in which you can support our work on animal welfare through donations to our charity shops, volunteering, supporting events or considering a donation legacy to support our work – so please reach out if you would like to help.

What is your favourite domestic and favourite British wild animal, and why?

My favourite domestic animal is definitely my dog, however I have to make sure I keep her at a very safe distance from the water birds.

I love observing the water birds of all varieties when out walking in the parks of my local area and am amazed when I see swans flying overhead.

Do you have an amusing/heart-warming animal related anecdote, story or joke that you can share?

Q: What do you get when you cross a sheep with a kangaroo?

A: A woolly jumper
