Remembrance Day – Remember Remarkable Animals Too

Today at 11 o’clock much of the nation will fall silent for two-minutes to remember the fallen who gave their lives for our freedom. Most of us will find it hard to truly appreciate what brave soldiers and their loved ones sacrificed during the world wars and more recent conflicts.

Whilst we rightly remember the millions affected, we should also spare a thought for equally courageous animals that played their part too. Horses and dogs may be obvious examples, but how about foxes, cats, camels, monkeys, pigeons & mules?

The Imperial War Museum in London has a wonderful article on its website highlighting the parts that animals played in World War One. Over 16 million animals served, used for transport, communication and companionship. Click here to read the article.

The part that animals played in keeping up the morale of those at war can not be underestimated. For young men & women far from home and facing a terrifying unknown, the companionship of a four-legged friend would have been a huge boost.
