Three Stray Cats

Our Animal Welfare Officer Cheska writes about the recent rescue of three stray cats

“One of the best parts of my day is getting to work with members of the community, and it is especially exciting and rewarding when you work together to contain a number of cats that need our help.

Isabel lives in Croydon and she had been keeping an eye on three local cats, two of them were named Peter and Pan who would hang out and appear together, and one other called Oliver who would appear by himself and sleep in the greenhouse around the back.

While all three cats looked to be in good health, it is when Pan started to develop a rather round belly that Isabel started to realise they – especially Pan – needed rescuing sooner rather than later.

She contacted us to ask if she could borrow a couple of our cat traps, and as she is local to me I was able to provide her with traps very quickly. Rather humorously, it only took the small amount of time for me to arrive back home for her to call me letting me know she had caught Oliver, so back out I went!

The next cat to be caught a week later was Peter, a frightened but eventually friendly ginger and white cat. We wondered what Peter and Pan’s story was and if he could be the father to Pan’s potential kittens!

Last but not least, Isabel managed to capture Pan and kept her indoors in a large dog crate over the weekend just in case she gave birth then and there.

On the Tuesday we took her in and got her settled with one of the cattery owners we use who had generously agreed to foster her and her kittens. We booked Pan in for a general check for this coming week, however she beat us to it and gave birth to four health kittens over the weekend.

Check out the video to see if you can make out the kitten shapes amongst all the black fur!

Oliver has already gone off to a new home, which is unsurprising as he is exceptionally beautiful and friendly. Now we are just waiting for Peter to be neutered and complete his vaccination courses before he is advertised for rehoming.

With Pan we have over two months to wait before she can find a new home. Luckily she is in very good hands so she can focus on raising her kittens in good health, so that they too can be rehomed when appropriate.”
