Lindsey Bartling – Trustee

Lindsey & friends

Tell me a little about yourself – I am a solicitor (since 2006) and in December 2021 became a Professional Conduct Committee Member for the Chartered Institute of Fundraising. I am also a student mentor.

I live in South London and like exercise that does not feel like exercise, like indoor climbing and street dancing

I had dogs growing up, but currently I don’t have my own pets at the moment, as I lost my rescue staffie (and best friend) to cancer a couple of years ago

How long have you been an RSPCA trustee?

Since November 2020

As a trustee, what are your responsibilities?

Organising board meetings and the AGM;

Helping members of the public afford treatment for their animals;

Promoting the work of the local RSPCA;

Member of the fundraising committee – overseeing gambling act legal requirements and running raffles and lotteries;

Assisting with legal requirements in running the charity and our shops;

Working with the local community to understand their needs and how we can best assist.

Why did you become a trustee of RSPCA?

Seeing the amazing way that a rescue can turn around the life of not only animals, but also their owners, is really rewarding and something I’d been keen to get involved with for so long. Working for an organisation with the support of the National Society means that we can reach both the people and animals in our community who need us.

Being a trustee also unlocks and develops skills that I can’t obtain elsewhere. I have met some lovely people with shared passions and have the chance to understand how the charity and the board works, as well as learning about fundraising and having the opportunity to experiment with different ideas for raising money for our important work.

Do you have a message for our followers/supporters/volunteers?

We couldn’t do what we do without you. We have fantastic volunteers who are passionate about what we do and really want to make a difference. From donating to and buying from our shops, to entering our quizzes and raffles, you make it possible for us to support vulnerable animals in the area.

We love that you share details of our animals for rehoming on your social media etc. It really does make a difference and makes sure that we find their perfect furever home.

We’re really keen to meet our community, whether that’s virtually on social media, at our shops or during our in-person events. If you’d like to meet us, or want to let us know about a project or issue you think we can assist with, please get in touch!

What is your favourite domestic and favourite British wild animal, and why?

Sorry to all the cats out there that I love, but I have to say my favourite domestic animal is a dog, especially a staffie. They’re often so misunderstood but are such amazing dogs when they’re given a chance and they’ll be your best friend and protector for life.

My favourite wild animals are deer. When you’re in a quiet forest somewhere and suddenly you chance upon a group of wild deer, it’s so magical.

Sussex RSPCA Inspector Georgina Bowles responds to a call regarding a Stag that is has become entangled in a fencing cord in a field in St Leonards-on-Sea, in East Sussex. The Stag was spotted by a member of the public whilst walking their dog.

The deer doesn't appear to be injured but is still mobile and very stressed and has become trapped in a section of woodland undergrowth. As well the cord that is wrapped around its antlers, it is trailing two wooden fence posts too.

Georgina calls the East Sussex Fire and rescue service, who arrive promptly and work with Georgie as a team to successfully free the deer.

Do you have an amusing/heart-warming animal related anecdote, story or joke that you can share?

The best professional joke I know is:

Q: What animals are on legal documents?

A: Seals!

But this one makes me giggle…

Q: What sound do porcupines make when they kiss?

A: Ouch!

Is there anything else to share?

I’m really excited about 2022 and the opportunities for our new expanded branch area. Hopefully that’s going to involve a lot of chances for dog cuddles!
